llms.txt is an optional text file that can summarise important content and links for machine readers. It does not replace crawlable HTML, sitemaps, robots.txt, structured data or strong internal linking.
What belongs in llms.txt?
A useful file contains a concise site description, main topic areas and links to priority service, platform and insight pages. It should be current, compact and free from marketing filler.
Is llms.txt a Google ranking factor?
No. Google has explicitly stated that llms.txt is not required for Google Search and does not improve or reduce rankings there.
When can the file still be useful?
It can serve as an additional machine-readable navigation layer if other systems use or support it. The key requirement is that it remains consistent with the actual website.
What matters more than llms.txt?
Clean HTML, clear navigation, indexable pages, useful content, sitemaps, canonicals, internal links and consistent entities have higher priority. llms.txt should never replace those fundamentals.
