Structured Data for AI Search: What Schema.org Actually Does

Where structured data can help search systems understand content and entities, and where its limits are.

Editorial team: AEO-Agentur.de

Structured data expresses visible page information in a standard machine-readable format. It can help search systems understand organisations, pages, articles, breadcrumbs and other entities, but it is not an automatic route into AI answers.

Which format is practical?

JSON-LD is the most practical approach for many websites. Use stable @id values, consistent organisation and website entities, and markup that accurately reflects visible content.

Which schema types are relevant to an agency website?

Common types include Organization, WebSite, WebPage, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList, and ItemList or CollectionPage for overview pages. Only mark up properties that genuinely exist.

Does schema directly improve AI Overviews or ChatGPT citations?

Structured data can support machine understanding, but neither Google nor OpenAI guarantees mentions or citations because of it. Google’s normal Search and structured-data guidelines still apply.

How should quality be checked?

Schema should be syntactically valid, match visible content and never invent reviews, authors, addresses or other trust signals. After launch, test live URLs with the relevant search and webmaster tools.
